Website statistics. You probably have them, but are you using them to catapult your business forward? If you're like most businesses, you probably are not.
What metrics do you use to measure the success of your business? How do you know if you're business is doing well, or if you need to amp up your marketing efforts? Lots of businesses an organizations use these tools:
- Profit & Loss Statements (P&L)
- Balance Sheets
- Bank account statements
- Sales reports
- Gut feelings!!!
If you're already using tools like this, why not use the website statistics too? This month, our web strategy team has been busy meeting with clients to help them find and interpret website statistics to help figure how much activity is being generated as a result of visitors to their website.
What if we told you that we could double the traffic to your site, and that would have a direct impact on the number of leads you got on a monthly basis? Well, if you're like most of the clients we have been talking to, you'd be very interested. Let's take a look at a few things we'll show you when we get together to review your website stats.
1. The Keywords that are currently driving traffic to your website.
Search Engines are already driving traffic to your website whether you have optimized it for search engines or not. Seeing which words are driving traffic (and how much) tells us if the people on your website already know about you, or if they are true prospects. If your business name is the keyword being used to drive a visitor to your website, then that person knew about you and typed in your business name in a web search to find you. If a visitor typed in the type of product or service you offer (ie. Coffee Shops in Tucson), then this person found you because of what you do. Most businesses want to be ranking for the keywords relating to their business so they can be visible to prospects looking for their services that don't already know about them.
2. The Keywords that are driving traffic to your competitor's websites.
By seeing which keywords are driving traffic to your business, it becomes abundantly clear which keywords are NOT driving traffic to your website. A simple search for keywords that you want to rank for will uncover who IS ranking for those words: your competitors. By running a few simple reports, we can also see how many searches happen monthly for any given keyword. What if the keyword in question is searched on 1,900 times per month. Would you like to get some of those visitors? You-betcha!
3. The pages that people are looking at on your site.
Your top visited pages should usually be your home page and your contact us page. This tells us that people are getting to your website and finding their way to contacting you. If this isn't the case, there could be a problem that needs to be fixed. Let's figure out why.
4. The percentage of visitors that leave your site almost as soon as they got there.
It's not a good thing if a very high percentage of your visitors reach your home page and leave as soon as they get there. This percentage is called a bounce rate. If this is too high, we need to ask why? Sometimes, it is a matter of giving the visitor a clearer call to action to continue deeper into your website. The longer someone spends on your site, the more likely they are to take the ‘next step' to contact you. That's a good thing!
5. The geographic location of your website visitors.
For certain businesses, this can be important. Are you a local business trying to attract customers where you operate your business? If so, looking at this report will tell you how well your site is attracting local visitors. If most of your visitors are out of the area, there may be a problem and we need to figure out what to do about it.
Time For A Tune-Up!
These are just a few of the typical reports that our web strategists will look at when we get together. Each business is different, so the interpretation of these reports is unique and custom to each business we meet with.
