4 Tips for Using  Business Testimonials

Customer testimonials truly stand the test of time. For decades, marketers have used customer recommendations to advertise businesses in print ads, direct mail, and television commercials. Now, testimonials can be used by online marketers in e-mails, web design, and of course, on social media sites. Here are what some of our client testimonials on web design.

There are a few key components that make a customer testimonial effective. To get the most out of testimonials for your business, follow these four tips:

1. Get Clearance

Before using a customer’s words in a testimonial, always get approval from that person. If you are going to edit or shorten the testimonial, then it’s best to mention any changes when you get approval. Also, tell the customer where you are publishing the testimonial, and while you’re at it, remember to thank them for their kind words!

2. Be Specific

The more information you can share about a testimonial speaker, the better. Try to get permission from the customer to use their first and last name and list their location, job title, industry, or other information when appropriate. If possible, include a headshot alongside the testimonial. A testimonial with a photo will draw more attention than a text testimonial alone. Ask customers to forward a profile picture from Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn for this purpose.

3. Seek Out Testimonials

One of the best ways to get stellar customer testimonials is to ask for them. Ask loyal clients for a few words describing their experience with your organization. Give them guidance about any specific keywords, products, or services to comment on. Finally, incentivize and reward customers for contributing testimonials with a thank you note, small gift, or discount.

4. Publish Liberally

Even the most gushing praise will be ineffective if you don’t use it to increase conversions and generate new leads. Place testimonials on your website or in the footer of an e-mail newsletter. Create a special tab for them on your Facebook business page.  When potential customers visit your website and Facebook page or read your marketing e-mails, they will see a track record of satisfied customers and be more likely to convert!
